Artist Statement


My photographs are often incomplete; almost enigmatic. Something shown but not quite explained;  perhaps leading outside the frame of the image; often with strong geometries -- especially the boundaries between light and dark; incorporating tonal differences as well.  Stairways, arches and paths or roadways attract me as subjects, especially when shadows play a role.


 I tend to photograph in black and white to avoid the distraction of color, concentrating on abstract properties described above.  But there are situations when color actually helps these properties, especially when calling forward other emotions that act when viewing an image.
